    •    Kitchen Mesa Trail (4.8 miles round-trip, moderate to difficult) – A thrilling hike that leads to the top of a mesa, offering breathtaking views of Ghost Ranch and the surrounding desert. Some scrambling is required at the top. Rumor has it the trail got its name because Georgia O'Keeffe looked out onto the rock formation from her kitchen.

    •    Orphan Mesa Trail (7 miles round-trip, difficult) – A lesser-traveled trail that rewards hikers with some of the best views in the area, taking you high above the landscape with expansive desert vistas.

After registration, they will give you a guest code for the gate. Register for access via a form at this site. Located off County Road 155.

Abiquiú Lake

For those looking for a hike with water views, the area around Abiquiú Lake provides scenic trails with sweeping vistas of the blue waters contrasting against the red rock mesas.

    •    Abiquiu Dam trail (approximately 1.5 miles, easy). • Footwear: With rocky terrain and uneven surfaces, sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good traction are essential for a safe and comfortable hike.

  • Sun Protection: The New Mexico sun can be intense, so make sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the UV rays.

  • Respect the Environment: Abiquiu’s hiking trails offer incredible views, but they also require care and respect. Stick to designated trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and pack out all trash to help preserve the area for future hikers.
